Upgrade From Wordpress.com To Self Hosted Wordpress.org
Many first time bloggers start out on Wordpress.com, only to discover they are limited in options, plugins, advertising and flexibility. When that happens, it’s time to step up your game and go with a mature blogging platform. I highly recommend Wordpress.org – the self-hosted option of the popular blogging software.
With the self hosted option, you no longer have anyone telling you what you can and can’t include for advertising, plugins, or content. Need a customized change? You can.
This video shows you how to take a Wordpress.com blog and move it – or upgrade it – to a self-hosted, no limits, rocking and ready to conquer the world blog. Okay, that might be overstating it a little, but it definitely has some way cool options and freedoms!
A few assumptions:
- You own a hosting account where you can create it. If not, consider IX Web Hosting or Bluehost. Both have great tech support, 24/7 access and all inclusive storage, domains and bandwidth options… and by all inclusive, I mean unlimited. (I use IX myself on more than 80 sites)
- You are comfortable working in multiple tabs in your browser.; (Okay, not strictly necessary but helpful)
- You already use the upgraded option at Wordpress.com to have your blog on a domain you bought.
- You are ready to get serious about your blogging.

For those of you have followed my directions on a few of the plugins like Ohz Admin Panel or some of the commenting plugins, this upgrade will require a bit of extra work for you.

I started out with Wordpress.com and have moved to Wordpress.org and I can’t tell you how much more I enjoy blogging now that I am in complete control of my blog. Things I couldn’t do before are things I do every day. As always you have a great website and a great blog.

Do I understand correctly that before I can move to Wordpress.org I have to have upgraded my wordpress site from the basic?

Actually, I think perhaps I misspoke myself since all you really need is the ability to “export” the posts and pages. If the Wordpress.com blogging software will allow you to do that, then you are golden.
Just export, create your new blog on your new domain at your new hosting account, and then import the pages and posts.
You will be skipping one or two steps that are shown in this video but the rest should be relevant.

Yes, the import / export function is available in the basic. But am I able to use the wordpress platform, themes, etc. for free? It seems like I would only be paying the new hosting site? Does that make sense?

Yes, your only real expense (aside from the once a year purchase for domain name) is the hosting. The Wordpress.org software is called Open Source, maintained by a series of wonderful programmers that contribute their time and energy to manage the software.
95% of the plugins available for Wordpress are also free. I have purchased a few of the really good ones but everything you need is free.
