Reciprocity and SEO

Most folks would define SEO (or search engine optimization) as the science or ability to optimize your site or blog for the search engines. That gets you visitors, right?
When the search engines can find you, typically, everyone else can. But is there another way? Do we have to rely on the giant search engines like Google, MSN or Yahoo to send visitors to our sites?

Once installed, Zemanta sits quietly in the *Add New* page, offering images, articles, products, blog posts and other related content, based on the keywords of your post. Adding a photo or related blog post is as easy as clicking the title.
Done.
If it’s a photo you are adding, it will neatly tuck it into the upper right of your post.
Adding a related blog post? Zemanta will insert text and links into your post like the one’s you see at the bottom of this post, automatically.
Setup Zemanta to include the *Reblog* option, and visitors can blog about and republish your content with a few clicks, gaining you more visitors. And everyone that visits the reblogged content, see’s your content.
Traffic from sources other than the search engines? Absolutely! Eye candy for your blog? You bet. A better experience for your visitors? No question.

A recent coaching session covered the SEO benefits of installing and using Headspace2. As members of that call will recognize, about 45 minutes was cut from this video. All the wasted time on technical difficulties is gone. Areas where the information was repeated (as in answering questions or covering the same concept on a different part of the call) were removed or spliced together to provide a single explanation.

I hate to do it. Tempt the fates that is. After weeks of effort, lost time, missed billables, disappointed clients and frustrated days — I think I am free. Virus free that is.
And even as I am writing this post, I feel a tremor in my loins. A quick check of my site in my FTP program shows a cache directory I didn’t update! Over time, your blog evolves (hopefully). This means category names change, posts are updated, files move or subdirectories are deleted. What happens when someone clicks a link to a post or file that is no longer there?

I know you thought you’d never hear me say this, but a plugin isn’t always the best way to handle a small change in your Wordpress Theme. Especially since each plugin adds it’s own load time to the overall page load time. Fast = visitors stay longer.
Come on, we are a generation of short-attention spanned humans, struggling to assimilate the thousands of bits of information that flow like a river into our awareness. The longer a page takes to load, the less inclined we are to look at other content on a site. One slow page, especially the main page, and most folks will pack up their little red wagon and move on. You are quite right. Zemanta is a lot of fun to work with and definitely adds that extra touch to your blog. Take it from me, a real newbie to blogging, this plug-in is really easy to use and fun besides.
