If you’ve been watching the news, you are probably getting a little nervous about now. It’s only a few short hours until the scheduled *hit* of the April Fool’s virus… and no, this isn’t a joke.
It is stage two of one of the most destructive computer worms ever known – a conficker worm dubbed the “cyberworm of mass destruction”.
Experts cite the dual measures of making sure your system is updated with the latest Microsoft security patches and backing up critical data as *just good business*. I would add a third step to this.
Download and have ready to run a new detection and removal tool from BitDefender Labs.
Downadup (or Conficker) is a network worm that takes advantage of vulnerabilities in Windows to spread. Its removal is complicated by the fact that it blocks many known antivirus software and associated websites.
BitDefender Labs has detected a new and more aggressive Downadup version. It spreads using a Windows RPC Server Service vulnerability and is called Win32.Worm.Downadup.Gen.
The worm itself is not new, it made its first appearance late November 2008, known under the names Conficker or Kido as well exploiting the vulnerability described in the Microsoft security bulletin MS08-067. After successful exploitation it used to install rogue security software on the infected machine.

Lukes last blog post..How To Apply The 80/20 Rule – Part I
http://www.bdtools.net was a really nice addtion to the list I had. I scanned my PC and had no trace of conficker, but I’m keeping different tools on stick now just in case. :)
Sadly, a good many were hit but because of excellent tools like BitDefender, it could have been worse. I am glad to count myself among the lucky one’s that didn’t have that to deal with.
Thanks for your comment. I appreciate you.
Always happy to help Luke, thanks for stopping by.
I think i had the latest conficker on my pc, I tried bdtools.net but it seems that the site is blocked by the latest conficker virus. After a little research i found out that bitdefender released another site with the removal tool located at disinfecttools.com. Worked for me.
@Cedume – I would be interested in seeing this *list* you have. Is there a blog post in it?
=)
Sorry, can’t help myself.
